South Korean soldiers fired around 20 warning shots when troops from the North approached the border after one of their comrades defected Thursday, Seoul's defence ministry said.

The Northern border guards appeared to be searching for the man, who had earlier crossed the Demilitarized Zone in thick fog to defect to the South, a ministry spokesman told AFP.
