The death toll from an avalanche on Mount Everest has risen to 14 and could rise further, a Nepalese official said Sunday.

"Fourteen deaths have been confirmed so far. We fear that the toll may rise, said Gyanendra Kumar Shrestha, an official in Nepal's tourism department.

"We are trying to send helicopters for rescue."
