Chilean director Pablo Larrain (Tony Manero) serves up a bold, creepy parable of what changed after the 1973 coup, focusing on an autopsy record-taker (Alfredo Castro) and an ageing cabaret dancer (Antonia Zegers) who find mutual solace. Just from Castro’s stalkerish lank hair, you know it’s not going to work out swimmingly. Larrain’s particular style has fervent devotees, but it can be a little too airless and pre-determined for its own good.
