Special Units of the Second Army arrested on Tuesday a dangerous element belonging to Ansar Beit al-Maqdis militant group that was blamed for many attacks in Egypt, including the assassination of a national security officer, army spokesman Ahmed Ali said.
Abdel Rahman Salama Salem, aka Rahmi, was arrested in Sinai, bringing to two the number of the group members who were arrested over the past two days.
The man blew up a grenade that was in his possession while he was being hunted down by security forces but no one was wounded, he added.
The spokesman said a wireless Motorola devise was found in his possession.
Another member of the group was killed during confrontations with the army.
The spokesman said five shacks used by militants to prepare for their terrorist operation were set on fire yesterday.
The same group has claimed responsibility for the failed September assassination attempt on the life of Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim.
