Tripoli - Arab Today
A car bomb exploded on Tuesday at a military base in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing two soldiers and injuring several others.
The bomb exploded at the main gate of the former Libyan Special Forces 21st Battalion headquarters in the second largest Libyan city, a military official said on condition of anonymity.
Camp guards failed to stop the car from dashing toward the main gate and the explosion caused major damage to the barrack's wall, the official said.
A medical official in Galaa Hospital told Xinhua that "the wounded was transferred to the Benghazi Medical Center for treatment."
Benghazi police said in a statement that they have "rapidly intervened into the case" and will look into the identities of the attackers.
Benghazi is the birthplace of the 2011 uprising against former leader Muammar Gaddafi. After the attack on the American diplomatic mission on Sept. 11, 2012, which killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, the city witnessed a drastic escalation of violence and has become a major base of extremists in North Africa.
