A Tunisian security officer is recovering in hospital with third degree burns after setting himself on fire in an attempted suicide. Eyewitnesses said the man set himself alight in public, with the motives of the attack unclear. Suicide attempts in Tunisia have increased steadily since the January 2011 revolution, with the official state figure at 626 cases. Majority of the attempts are from young people who are living below the poverty line and struggling to find employment.
