Secretary General of the Islamic Research Academy Mohieddin Afifi said Monday Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyeb and Pope Francis of the Vatican emphasized the two top religious institutions' role in developing new visions to activate religions' role in spreading mercy and love.

Afifi, who is currently accompanying the Grand Imam in his historic visit to the Vatican, added that the two top religious leaders also affirmed the importance of activating Al Azhar and the Vatican role at the global level.

Tayeb arrived here earlier on a historic visit, the first of its kind, leading an Azhar delegation comprising undersecretary Abbas Shoman, head of Al Azhar Interfaith Dialogue Center Mahmoud Zaqzouq and Secretary General of the Islamic Research Academy Mohieddin Afifi.
