Human Rights Watch has said Syrian forces have recently placed land mines near the borders with Lebanon and Turkey. Civilian casualties have already resulted, the New-York based group said on Monday, citing witnesses and deminers linked with the opposition. “There is absolutely no justification for the use of these indiscriminate weapons,” said Steve Goose, Arms Division director at Human Rights Watch. Antipersonnel mines are considered militarily ineffective weapons that mostly kill and injure civilians.
