Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, will discuss human rights issues in Zimbabwe during her first visit next week, at the invitation of President Robert Mugabe, the United Nations said Monday. UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said it was the first time Mugabe had invited the human rights chief. She will be in Harare for five days from May 20, meeting Mugabe and government officials, and engaging civil society in discussions on the country’s human rights situation. The UN said Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had formally asked the UN General Assembly to extend Pillay’s mandate for another two years when her current four-year term expires this year.
