The International Islamic Relief Organisation (IIRO) has warned of the consequences of the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen due to the continuing unrest in some areas, calling on all regional and international organizations to take immediate initiative to provide aid and assistance to save millions of affected people there from the clutches of hunger and disease. Secretary-General of the IIRO Adnan bin Khalil Basha said in a press release on Wednesday that according to UN reports, about 10 million people are suffering from severe food shortage, while half of them do not find their daily bread and in dire need of immediate assistance in addition to 1 million children suffering from malnutrition. According to these reports, half the population in Yemen suffer from a shortage of clean drinking water and poor sanitation, the IIRO Secretary-General pointed out. This tragic situation faced by millions of people in Yemen, also brought a great suffering in the medical services, including a severe shortage of medicines, as many hospitals and clinics had completely stopped providing therapeutic services, leading to massive numbers of deaths, he added. He also said that the UN reports showed that hundreds have fled their homes to escape the famine, stressing the need of concerted efforts of all humanitarian organizations to alleviate the human suffering in the country.
