Israel played a main role in canceling a Russian planned missile deal with Syria, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said on Saturday. The foiled deal involved S-300 surface-to-air missiles, the most sophisticated systems in the world, Barak told Israeli radio. According to the radio, the deal was canceled as a result of a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Israel last week. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres discussed the deal with the Russian President during his visit. This announcement coincided with a release of a report by the UN Security Council committee on Iranian sanctions' violations, including shipments of weapons to Syria.
