Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the country's new national security laws will have historic importance. At a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Abe spoke about the legislation that goes into effect on Tuesday of next week. The new laws allow Japan to exercise the right to collective self-defense. They also expand the activities of Self-Defense Forces overseas. 

    He said the laws will further ensure Japan's peace and safety. He said it will allow Japan to make more active contributions to enhancing deterrence and to increase peace and stability in the international community, according to Japan's (Kyodo) News Agency.

    Abe said the government should be prepared for every possibility when it comes to national security. He said the government's heaviest responsibility is protecting the lives of the people under any circumstances.

    Abe said he wants the Defense Ministry and the Self-Defense Forces to be fully prepared under Defense Minister Gen Nakatani to properly and safely fulfill new missions under the new laws.

    Abe said it is important for the government to win wide public support in promoting the security measures. He added that he wants the relevant cabinet ministers to continue working together to gain greater public understanding.
