The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union has called on the armed movements to join the Doha Peace Agreement and contribute to strengthening the peace process as well as to stop all acts of violence and movements that threaten the security and stability in Darfur. The council threatened in a statement issued last night to take appropriate sanctions against any individuals or groups threatening the Doha Peace Agreement, demanding the UN Security Council to take similar steps. The Peace and Security Council expressed great concern over the intransigence of some movements who reject to join the peace agreement, despite the great efforts made by the UN-African mediation team, calling them to join the peace agreement as soon as possible to achieve lasting and comprehensive peace in Darfur. The Council also praised the great role played by the Sudanese government for the success of the peace agreement in its implementation phase and what had been achieved by the regional authority for Darfur. In the same context, the PSC expressed appreciation for the achievements made by the Doha Peace Agreement in Darfur, especially in the areas of the ceasefire and security arrangements. According to the statement, there is an estimated 1.7 million citizens still displaced in camps and tens of thousands of refugees are in neighboring countries, especially Chad, which requires intensified efforts to solve the issue as soon as possible. The Peace and Security Council of the African Union called on the International Community to provide the necessary support to successfully implement the Doha Peace Agreement. praising at the same time the efforts made by the International Monitoring Committee of Doha Agreement and decided to extend the mandate of the UNAMID mission by one year.
