Russia has presented a renewed version of a draft resolution on Syria at the UN Security Council, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation at the UN Alexander Pankin told Russian journalists. "The new version of the draft resolution contains a whole lot of elements which concern the humanitarian and human rights situation and a mechanism for local cessation of fire," (Itar-Tass) news agency quoted Pankin as saying. The Russian diplomat recalled that the initiative about a gradual cessation of fire had been "discussed by (special envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States) Kofi Annan in Damascus with the leadership of Syria". "The idea looks efficient enough. This is why we suggested it, considering that six points of Kofi Annan's plan still retain their importance. Moreover, in the very first paragraph (of the draft resolution) we insist on their implementation," Pankin emphasized. There are currently two draft resolutions on Syria for UNSC to consider. The first one, prepared by Russia, envisions an extension of the mandate of the UN Observer Mission in Syria for three months, whereas the Western one limits the period of the UN observers' stay there by 45 days and contains a threat of sanctions with regard to Damascus. Voting on both draft resolutions is scheduled for Wednesday. "Nothing is ruled out," Pankin said, stressing that still there is time for additional consultations.
