US President Donald Trump said today he "will absolutely do safe zones in Syria" for refugees fleeing violence in the war-torn country. 
Syria's six-year civil war has left 400,000 dead, according to the UN and Arab league envoy to Syria back in April 2016. "It’s a disaster, what’s happening there," Trump said. 
In an interview with the ABC Trump criticized German Chancellor Angela Merkel's immigration policies. Trump said Merkel made a "catastrophic mistake" by welcoming an influx of immigrants into her country but maintained that he has "great respect" for the German leader. 
Trump stated during his presidential campaign a plan to start setting up "safe zones" for refugees in Syria, a step that Barack Obama long resisted, fearing the potential for being pulled deeper into the conflict and the threat of clashes between US and Russian warplanes over Syria.
