The United Arab Emirates recalled its ambassador to Tehran on Thursday for consultations, state news agency WAM said. The move follows the UAE’s protests over a visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a disputed island. During his visit to Abu Musa island on Wednesday, Ahmadinejad said that historical documents proved “the Persian Gulf is Persian.” The UAE foreign ministry had earlier blasted the visit, saying it was a “flagrant violation” of UAE sovereignty over its territories.
