The UN humanitarian coordinator in Congo on Wednesday voiced concern over the fate of more than 35,000 displaced people who have fled camps in the east of the country following clashes between the Congolese army and armed groups.

Most of the displaced people had initially fled from rebel groups into the area in Masisi in North Kivu province in 2012. Thousands of people have sought safety in surrounding villages since the five camps were emptied starting on March 27, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Congo. 

"Although some who fled the fighting have started to return, the situation remains volatile and of great concern," it said in a statement.
