At least six people were killed in Bangladesh on Wednesday, mainly in clashes between police and protesters angry at arrangements for a general election on January 5, police said. According to dpa, eight people were killed on Tuesday during a strike called by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led opposition alliance of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, after the government refused her request for a neutral caretaker government to oversee the polls. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last week proposed an interim government including all parties for the duration of the elections, but Zia refused to participate and called the strike.
