A fisherman was killed when his boat crashed into a tanker off the Italian western coast on Monday, local media reported.
The man, reportedly aged 60, was onboard a 17-meter-long fishing boat which sank after crashing into the tanker around 5.5 km away from the Formia port, south of Rome, for unknown reasons.
The local coastal guard rushed to the spot and managed to save another fisherman who was onboard the same boat, according to Latina 24 Ore local newspaper.
The tanker was transporting water, according to the newspaper. A firefighter boat, a tug boat and an aircraft were also deployed to exclude the presence of polluting agents in the water.
The second fisherman was reported to be injured though not in serious condition. Local authorities were at work to ascertain the causes of the accident and possible responsibilities, Latina 24 Ore said.
