Havana - XINHUA
Heavy rains in western Cuba have caused numerous floods and several house collapses in Havana city, leaving two people dead, local media reported Saturday. The serious incident occurred in the municipality of Centro Habana, the most vulnerable housing area in the island's capital city. A building of several floors collapsed, causing the deaths of a 54 year-old man and a woman aged 60. House collapse is frequent in the old areas of Havana when the city is hit by heavy rains. According to the National Statistics Bureau, the island has over three million housing units, with 85 percent of them in regular or bad conditions. Cuba's Meteorology Institute said the heavy rains were caused by the combination of a winter cold front coming from north and an atmospheric precipitations area coming from south. The meteorological forecast indicated that the rains will continue in western and central Cuba on Saturday and early Sunday.
