Eighteen illegal immigrants died off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa while trying to reach Europe by ship from Africa, the Italian navy said Sunday.
The navy rescued 73 people from the boat and found 18 dead bodies. There was approximately 3,500 people aboard the ship who have been rescued since Friday, the navy and coast guard said.
