The death toll of the deadly attack targeting an army run school in Peshawar city of northern Pakistan reached 84 on Tuesday, said officials.
Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province Pervez Khattak said in a statement that at least 84 people including mostly children have been killed in the attack so far.
A doctor in the Leady Reading Hospital, Dr. Zafar Iqbal told KUNA that around 80 injured children have been brought to the hospital with many of them in critical condition.
KPK Minister of Information Shah Farman said there are approximately 80-100 unconfirmed deaths. He further said, "An operation is currently underway and the army is trying hard to bring the situation under control." According to initial reports, around six terrorists have burst into the Army Public School Peshawar located on Warsak Road where 500 students and teachers are believed to be inside.
An emergency has been declared in all hospitals of the provincial capital and security forces have cordoned off the area and evacuation of children is underway. Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif left for Peshawar to supervise the ongoing operation against the militants.
In a short statement, he said, "I have decided to proceed to Peshawar and I will supervise the operation myself. These are my children and it is my loss."
