A collision of two commuter trains that injured
about 240 people near Johannesburg was caused by a faulty signal, a
spokeswoman for South Africa's Railway Safety Regulator said Sunday, according to dpa.

Both trains were travelling from Booysens to Soweto on the same line
late Friday.

A train that was moving hit a stationary one from behind because a
signal that should have ordered it to stop did not turn red,
spokeswoman Babaluwa Mpendu said.

"We are investigating why the signal did not function," she said.

None of the victims sustained critical injuries. Nearly all of them
have been discharged from hospital, Mpendu said.
