Tokyo stocks ended 0.64 percent lower on Monday, with the Nikkei index briefly fell below 14,000 threshold for first time in five weeks weighed by the yen's appreciation.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 90.15 points, or 0.64 percent, from Friday at 14,006.44 after hitting a low of 13,991.80 in mid-afternoon.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 9 points, or 0.78 percent, lower at 1,150.07.
Major decliners included rubber, real estate steel and electronics issues.
The turnover was 1550.3 billion yen (about 15.27 billion U.S. dollars).
