Tokyo stocks ended 0.73 percent higher in the morning session of Monday, with the Nikkei index briefly hitting a one-month high bolstered by upbeat U.S. housing data.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 104.87 points, from Friday to 14,567.04, after briefly hitting 14,592.60, its highest intraday level since April 22.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 10.8 points, or 0.91 percent, to 1,191. 24.
Major gainers included brokerage, steel and utility shares.
