The index is just shy of the record high

Tokyo stocks ended sharply higher on Monday morning, with its benchmark Nikkei stock index surging 2.23 percent as investor sentiment was lifted by recent rally in U.S. shares and the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 329.08 points from Friday to 15,107.45.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 21.89 points, or 1.78 percent, to 1, 250.15.
Major gainers included insurance, real estate and chemical shares. .
