Tokyo stocks ended 1.16 percent lower in the morning session on Thursday due to the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar and overnight losses on Wall Street.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 168.47 points, or 1. 16 percent, from Wednesday's close to 14,308.69.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange plunged 16.49 points, or 1.41 percent, to 1, 155.58.
Decliners were led by brokerage, oil and coal as well as insurance shares, while retail issues gained ground.
