Tokyo stocks opened higher early Thursday morning, weighed by the yen's depreciation and overnight gains on Wall Street.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 138.22 points, or 0.98 percent, from Wednesday to 14,180.39.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 8.99 points, or 0.78 percent, to 1,159. 04.
Export-oriented shares, such as automakers led the gain.
