Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher on early Thursday morning as the yen's depreciation against the U. S. dollar gave a boost to export-oriented shares.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 81.02 points, or 0.52 percent, from Wednesday to 15,535.47.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 5.89 points, or 0.46 percent, at 1,285. 53.
