Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher on Monday morning, with the Nikkei stock index briefly hitting its five-month high bolstered by overnight gains on Wall Street.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 70.98 points, or 0.46 percent, from Friday to 15,420.40, after hitting 15,433.18, its highest intraday level since Jan. 24.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 2.08 points, or 0.16 percent, to 1,271. 00.
