Tokyo stocks rose 0.79 percent in the morning session of Thursday as market sentiment was lifted by the yen's depreciation.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average climbed 121.37 points, from Wednesday to 15,575.82.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 9.46 points, or 0.74 percent, at 1,289. 10.
Major gainers included rubber products and insurance, as well as oil and coal products.
