A group of bandits near the southern city of Benevento fled with more than 850,000 euros after hijacking an armoured car on a state freeway Friday morning, police said. The masked thieves blocked the road in both directions and managed to crack the lock on the reinforced doors with heavy equipment. The bandits then escaped in five cars that the police found abandoned nearby. Roadblocks have been set up throughout the region of Campania and local authorities have requested state helicopter surveillance.
