A state of tension is dominating the North Sinai governorate following the death of Egypt\'s former parliamentarian and tribal leader, abdel-Hamid Salem. The residents of Arish blame supporters of Egypt\'s former leader Mohammed Morsi for the incident, as he expressed support for Egypt\'s military. A security source said that the former parliamentarian was killed after being attacked by armed people during his exit from the mosque after performing dawn prayers. A medical source said that armed men opened fire on Salem from their car, after which they then escaped. Extremists are escalating attacks against security and military headquarters, which has led to forces announcing a state of alert in Arish and Rafah.
