Congo bans demonstrations hours ahead of opposition rally

Congolese authorities banned all demonstrations across the country Tuesday, hours before a planned opposition rally to protest against the president's controversial bid to extend his stay in power.
The president's office said in a message broadcast on radio and TV and sent to the press that people were expected to work "as normal" and that gatherings were therefore "banned". Earlier, communications were cut in Congo's capital Brazzaville.
