The Republic of Congo's President Denis Sassou Nguesso said Tuesday he planned to call a presidential election for the first quarter of next year, earlier than scheduled.
Under the terms of a controversial new constitution adopted in November after a referendum that would allow Sassou Nguesso to extend his term in office, an election was due to be held in July.
But he told lawmakers he wanted to bring it forward to implement the "new dynamic" following the referen
