EU slams 'backsliding' by Turkey on membership criteria

The EU criticised Turkey in a report on its bid for membership on Wednesday for slipping backwards on democracy, rights and the rule of law in the wake of a coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"It is time Ankara tells us what they really want," European Union enlargement commissioner Johannes Hahn said, noting there had been "backsliding" in key areas of Turkey's EU accession process.
