Dubai - Arabstoday
A comprehensive rehabilitation project at the coastline of Jumeirah 1 is expected to be completed soon, providing residents and fishermen with relief from the rising tide. In a statement, Eng Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, announced that 90 per cent of the coastal line project at Jumeirah 1 has already been completed. Located north of the fishing port at a cost of Dh15 million, the project covers 1,380 metres in length and includes setting up a fishing dock, in addition to breakwaters. “This project is a reflection of the municipality’s role in protecting the coast and its surrounding areas, and is a comprehensive rehabilitation project for the coastal line of Jumeirah 1,” said Lootah. The coastal project, according to Lootah, consists of two breakwaters at a length of 100 metres and 120 metres, which have already been completed. “The breakwaters’ function is to repair the coastal line accordingly and to limit erosion. And we have also repaired the area by re-feeding the coast with 300,000 square metres of coastal sand,” he explained, noting that 80 per cent of this phase has been completed. The coastal project included the redesign of a fishing port through establishing a new tide breaker at the port’s entrance, in order to limit the accumulation of sand and residue that tends to clog the port. “We have received several complaints from fishermen about the port being clogged because they have to use it on a daily basis, so the municipality has already removed 40,000 square metres of residue there,” said Lootah, who noted that the depth in the area was extended to four metres to help the boats sail smoother. “The coastal area in Jumeirah 1 has been eroded and this has threatened not only the port and fishermen, but to residents as well who live nearby,” he added.
