Abu Dhabi - Arabstoday

Gravel left from demolition and construction work in the Bani Yas area will be recycled and used as raw material to pave roads, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi has announced. The pilot project, which is part of the municipal Green Roads Classification System, aims to reduce the amount of construction waste dumped at landfill, the statement added. Abdullah Saeed Al Shamsi, acting executive director of infrastructure and municipal assets at the municipality, said the project also aims to improve policies adopted in the design and construction of roads. \"The Municipality is currently assessing two green road classification projects in the city of Abu Dhabi. The first is on Al Salam Street and the second is in the Bahya area. These two projects will form the base on which the project\'s next phase will be launched,\" said Dr Jamal Al Dhareef, technical advisor at the municipal infrastructure and assets sector. Al Shamsi added that the municipality has also launched several other initiatives to improve sustainability, including the use of plastic materials in designing and constructing roads that have achieved cost savings of Dh27 million, along with minimising the use of raw materials in construction. Asphalt is also being reused in road maintenance at present and has resulted in 80 per cent of materials being saved.
