UNESCO condemns killing of Egyptian journalist

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) condemned on Wednesday the killing of Egyptian photographer journalist Ahmad Al-Sanusi. Director General of the UNESCO Irina Bokova condemned the murder of Al-Sanusi, calling on governments to respect the right of journalists to do their work safely. Bokova also noted the importance of free journalism for the whole of society to be able to make an educated and right choice. Al-Sanusi, who worked for the Freedom and Justice newspaper, was shot dead on July 8 while taking footage of a protest. The UNESCO is the only organization within the UN system that defends freedom of journalism and freedom of expression as part of its mandate.
