Twenty-three students were suspended for two semesters by the Al-Hashimiyah University while some others were referred to investigative committees on Sunday after a brawl on the campus. Abdul Ilah Zaboun, Public Relations and Media Director at the university near the city of Zarqa, said the university’s staff and security personnel had managed to bring under control the fracas in which stones were used, causing minor injuries to one student. He denied news website reports that firearms had been used. He said those behind the quarrel that broke out this morning had received the stiffest penalty as per the university’s laws and regulations, vowing the university would have zero tolerance when it comes to those provoking or participating in any brawls that could tarnish its reputation. “The university will categorically refuse to yield any space to unruly elements, which comprise a very limited number of students, to undermine the reputation of higher education in Jordan regardless of the pressures to reinstate them,” added Zaboun.
