Emirates said on Thursday it has entered into an agreement with Rockwell Collins for the provision of new image generation and projection systems for the airline’s fleet of high-tech, full flight simulators. Under the terms of the agreement, Rockwell Collins will initially provide 10 visual systems that feature the company’s EP®-8000 image generation and liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) projection systems, Emirates said in a statement. It added that two of the visual systems will be installed on Emirates’ new Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 flight training simulators, while one will replace an existing 777 visual system and the remaining seven will be upgrades to existing simulators with Rockwell Collins visual components. “With improved imagery, pilots will get an even greater sense of realism during simulated training,” Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Executive Vice-President Engineering and Operations, said in a statement, adding that the realism provided by the new system combined with the Evidence Based Training philosophy which Emirates promotes will further improve its pilots’ skills and standards. Rockwell Collins’ EP-8000 image generation and LCoS projection system is proven, having achieved Level D certification from governing authorities on various flight simulators. According to LeAnn Ridgeway, Vice-President and General Manager, Simulation and Training Solutions for Rockwell Collins, the system is more cost-effective to maintain through use of commercial off-the-shelf components for airlines.
