Hamadoun Toure
Kuwait - KUNA

Kuwait's efforts to develop systems and standards and applications for telecommunications purposes, such as the launching of its e-government portal, are to be highly commended, said head of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Hamadoun Toure, at an IT meeting here on Thursday.
Addressing The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), being held here today, Toure praised the work being done in Kuwait by the Central Apparatus for Information Technology (CAIT) in promoting the merits of telecommunications and IT services among the populace.
Kuwait's permanent representative to UN organizations ambassador Jamal Al-Ghenaim told KUNA he appreciated the extolment the ITU accorded Kuwait. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is responsible for issues that concern information and communication technologies. The ITU promotes international cooperation in assigning satellite orbits, works to improve telecommunication infrastructure in the developing world, and assists in the development and coordination of worldwide technical standards.
ITU also organizes worldwide and regional exhibitions and forums, such as the one being held here today, bringing together representatives of government and the telecommunications and ICT industry to exchange ideas, knowledge and technology.
ITU, based in Geneva, Switzerland, is a member of the United Nations Development Group. Its membership includes 193 Member States and around 700 Sector Members and Associates.
In a similar statement to KUNA, CAIT deputy director general Qusay Al-Shatti said his organization was keen to adopt the latest technologies for the benefit of government ministries and agencies and the public. He said there was ample coordination and consultation among GCC states in the exchange of expertise on such things as improving e-government services to the public or enhancing privacy and security while using IT applications.
He noted that CAIT was contemplating to set up a center to respond to emergency cases affecting the performance of internet services and networks that are being used by the government or individuals.
