UAE keeps up with innovations, highest standards in metrology

Dr. Rashid bin Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of State and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology, ESMA, said that the UAE has noted the importance and contributions of the science of metrology in different areas of society.
He added that the metrology, the science of weights and measures, represents a major foundation of scientific research and provides the conditions for innovation and continuous development in the public and private sectors, to respond to ambitions of the wise leadership to be always among top nations.
In a statement on the occasion of the country’s participation in World Metrology Day, held annually on 21st May, under this year’s theme, "Measurements for transport", Dr. bin Fahad stated that metrology can contribute to decreasing the number of accidents on land, sea and air, as metrology not only contributed to the local economy, but it also has direct contributions to encouraging international trade.
He added that the UAE took the responsibility for establishing the Gulf Association for Metrology, BIPM, and heading for six years, after acknowledging the importance of metrology in different sectors, as accurate measurements in the transport sector protect individuals and property from accidents.
He referred to examples, including when inaccurate measurements of a fan in a plane engine resulted in an imbalance, and an inaccurate measurement of the emanation from a ship’s engines at sea resulted in an increase above the allowed limit, with negative effects on the environment.
"We managed, in the UAE during the past years, to achieve the highest international standards in different fields of metrology", he added, while highlighting the importance of the science of metrology to the nation and people’s lives," he added.
The UAE minister also stressed that metrology not only impacts the economy, but it also contributes to other areas related to the health and safety of members of society, as well as improving their quality of life and protecting the environment.
