Algiers central post office to be transformed into museum

The Central Post Office in Algiers (la Grande Poste d’Alger), built a hundred years ago, will be converted into a museum that will tell the history of post and telecommunications in Algeria, announced Sunday Zohra Derdouri, Minister of Post and Information and Communication Technologies.
“The decision was taken by President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika: the Algiers central post office will be transformed into a museum, in which visitors will discover the history of the post and telecommunications in Algeria,” Derdouri added during an inspection visit.
Dedouri, accompanied by the Wali (Governor) of Algiers, Abdelkader Zoukh, extensively visited the imposing Moorish style building to determine “in what measures the project could be implemented,” she stated.
Inaugurated in 1913, the Algiers Central Post Office, built across the commercial harbour, below the Government Palace and close to the University of Algiers, will be transformed into a museum while keeping a space for postal services, explained the minister.
The project will be financed through a roundtable discussion between the government, Algérie Poste and Algérie Télécom.
