New Century revives old Cinema Karim in downtown Cairo

New Century Production Company (CNPC) has reopened downtown's Cinema Karim as Dunya Karim ending years of silence in the screening rooms of the once bustling film venue.
Located in the theatre entertainment district on Emad El-Din street, Cinema Karim opened in the 1980s as a venue for alternative Egyptian and international films.
The cinema was forced to shut its doors in the late 2000s due to financial woes, at a time when many other cinema theatres suffered monetary crises.
CNPC renovated the cinema’s two old screening rooms.
The main hall at cinema Karim seats 480 viewers, while the small hall maintains a capacity of 110.
The company also renovated both the interior and exterior of the cinema while preserving the classic architecture of the building and surrounding area.
The reopening of the cinema is important for re-establishing a movie audience in downtown, according to Ahmed Badawy, the CEO of New Century.
“Downtown was once a centre attracting movie goers in Egypt, and that has changed with the decline of the cinema’s quality."
CNPC said it would install technological improvements including digital, 3D, and sound system equipments.
"Now, equipping Karim Cinema with the latest equipment, we hope to re-invite these movie goers to this centre and revive its cultural role,” Badawy stated.
