New Delhi - AFP

India said Monday it would probe a five-hour electricity blackout at Delhi airport after a new terminal was plunged into darkness, affecting scores of domestic and international flights. Operations at the 2.7-billion-dollar terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport ground to a halt on Sunday morning as the power supply went down and back-up generators failed.\"We will set up a committee to probe Sunday\'s power failure at Delhi airport,\" aviation minister Vayalar Ravi said, according to the Press Trust of India news agency. Local newspapers reported that X-ray machines, check-in desks and the baggage handling system were all unable to operate. Some arriving passengers were stuck on board their planes until they were guided to the terminal via car headlights, the Times of India reported.\"We had to shut all access to the terminal except one as it had already become very crowded inside,\" an airport official told the newspaper.\"The situation was completely chaotic inside. The airport is a high-risk zone and it is completely absurd for a situation like this to arise.\"The terminal was inaugurated amid much fanfare last July when it was hailed as an example of India\'s ability to complete major infrastructure projects on time.
