Lilongwe - Arabstoday

Wilderness Safaris is offering a great package for those fascinated by rhinos, or for those who simply want to get up close and personal with the best of Malawi’s Wildlife. The “Rhino Tracking Experience” is a unique opportunity for guests of Mvuu Camp and Lodge to track, see and learn about black rhino in Liwonde National Park. The tracking will take place using a vehicle, and when closer tracking may be on foot. In the late 1980’s the last black rhinoceros disappeared from Malawi and in the 1990’s the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, South Africa National Parks, the J&B Circle (Endangered Species of Malawi) and Wilderness Safaris joined forces to remedy the situation with a black rhino re-introduction project. In 1993 the first breeding pair of black rhino arrived in Liwonde National Park and following further relocations and successful breeding, Liwonde currently has a total of 14 black rhino and nearby Majete Wildlife Reserve has 12. Using the VHF radio/satellite collars the trackers will be looking for and taking note of any signs indicating the presence of black rhino. Guests can expect to see a variety of signs showing that the black rhino is present in the area, learn more about their behaviour, habitat and habits. The tracking team will explain significant landmarks and bring the rhino tracking experience to life with stories of past encounters with black rhino during the drive.
