Relations fray following an unsuccessful peace summit in Addis Ababa Khartoum – Abedalgoum Ashmeag Sudan's ruling National Congress Party [NCP] has accused South Sudan of not committing to resolving differences between the two states. Rabie Abdelati Obeid, a NCP member, has accused Juba of heightening tensions by supporting the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North [SPLM-N] and “internationalising” the conflict.
Speaking exclusively to Arabstoday, Obeid said: “The African mediatiors insist on implementing comprehensive agreements between the two countries. But it still needs six months to continue endeavours to penetrate outstanding issues.”
Obeid claimed the dispute was no longer economic, after Sudan reportedly recovered from the loss of southern oil revenues. However politically, he said, “post-separation problems are still going on. They are linked to foreign interests which go far beyond Sudan itself.”
“The government has been keen to implement agreements with South Sudan, but the other party had refused our offers,” the NCP member claimed.
Sudan's ambassador in Addis Ababa, Abdul Rahman Ser Alkhetm meanwhile revealed that “no new arrangements” had taken place between presidents Omar al-Bashir and Salva Kiir.
Authorities in South Kordofan state have reinforced border security with South Sudan, after negotiations between al-Bashir and Kiir failed in Addis Ababa on Friday.
