Government spokesman says ‘The situation is under control’ Khartoum – Abedalgoum Ashmeag The Sudanese army announced on Saturday morning that the armed forces thwarted an attack by the Revolutionary Front in South Kordofan. The army confirmed that the Front suffered "heavy losses, weapon seizures, and the killing of 50 of its troops," adding that “4 tanks were completely destroyed."
A spokesman for the Sudanese army, Colonel al-Sawarmi Khaled Saad, said in a statement: "After signing the Charter of the New Dawn in Kampala, the so-called Revolutionary Front began shelling the armed forces posts on Friday in the Alhumra and Alahimr regions in South Kordofan state. This was followed by an attack carried out by 8 tanks with the aim of advancing the Front’s position to be able to bomb the city of Kadugli, targeting innocent citizens. "
Sawarmi added that: "Armed forces were able to thwart the attack and fully destoy 4 tanks, killing more than 50 rebels. The armed forces seized a large number of weapons, but suffered a number of killings and wounding in the battle with the rebels."
Sawarmi concluded his radio official statement saying: "This is the first result of the so-called Charter of the New Dawn, which was signed by the opposition parties in Kampala.” He stressed that “those involved in the planning, preparation or supporting of the document are participating in the killing of the innocent and defenceless."
In turn, the spokesman for the state government of South Kordofan Rejeb al-Pasha told ArabsToday: "The situation is under control.” He added that the government will “thwart the Revolutionary Front plots, out of its responsibility for the security of the homeland."
Pasha added: "We are against chaos and murder,” describing what the Front is doing as “an attempt to destroy the Sudanese state, and spread chaos. This is dangerous and not acceptable."
A source in the state of South Kordofan who preferred not to be named told Arabstoday: "The areas which the Front tried to control contain vital posts for the Sudanese army." The source also noted that that "elements of the so-called Revolutionary Front tried to achieve victories on the ground in the state, but failed." The source expected that “the Front will continue its operations in an attempt to achieve victory."
Meanwhile, a leader of the Ministry of Agriculture in South Kordofan state, Ali Coco, was assassinated when he was on his way to the town of Kadugli near Alkriql, about 40 km from the state capital. It is thought to be likely that rebels carried out the assassination operation.
