Egyptian Parliament
Cairo – Akram Ali
Egyptian Parliament Cairo – Akram Ali Observers Without Borders, the New World Foundation for Development and Human Rights, demanded that Mohammed Morsi, the Egyptian president, dissolve the Shura Council. This came in response to the Supreme Administrative Council backing the Supreme Constitutional Court’s verdict to invalidate the parliamentary elections and to dissolve the current Parliament after a legislative flaw in the election law had been proved unconstitutional.
The National Committee for the Defense of Freedom of Expression meanwhile attacked the Constituent Assembly, as they are tasked with drafting the constitution against the backdrop of Mana Tibi’s resignation.
She has refused to participate in the counter-revolution which is being prepared by the members of the Assembly, describing the experience as “bitter and black.” She believed that the new constitution which is about to be drafted will be “the worst of all Egyptian constitutions, upholding the pillars of the previous regime, with only the personnel different.”
The Committee announced that they had severe concerns regarding what is happening within the Assembly and predicted that, if the current approach is continued, then catastrophe is imminent.
They said during a press conference in on Monday that “the Assembly has not drafted a constitution that reflects the identity and the culture and the diversity of the Egyptian people which raises the concerns of a large those Egyptians who support freedom of expression.” They fear the control of a certain faction inside the Assembly which is anti-freedom of expression and against the rights and gains for which so many Egyptians have fought and died for.
The Committee stressed the need for the independence of the national newspapers and media, allowing them to be an arena for open dialogue between everyone, regardless of their opinions and viewpoints. They also called for the formation of a Supreme Council for Press and Information, which should be independent from all authorities.
